Lightning Kills 1 In Rocky Mountain National Park

ESTES PARK, Colo. (CBS4) - Lightning killed a woman and injured seven others in Rocky Mountain National Park on Friday.

Park staff said the strike occurred at approximately 1:20 p.m. on the Ute Crossing Trail, near Trail Ridge Road and between Rainbow Curve and Forest Canyon Overlook.

Two were taken by ambulance and five transported themselves to the Estes Park Medical Center. Three patients were admitted for burns and one for a fractured elbow.

"It's just a really sad thing when we have injuries and even worse when we have a fatality," Dr. Martin Koschnitzke with the Estes Park Medical Center said. "Burns on the feet are fairly common, people will be knocked off their feet and suffer injuries that way."

The victims' names haven't been released.

One man who was treated and released Friday evening told CBS4 he and his wife and a group of hikers were headed back to their car when the storm moved in quickly.

The strike knocked him and his wife off their feet, he said, and blew his wife's shoes off.

The woman who died was not part of his group.
