Leadville Man Who Stomped On Ex-Girlfriend's Head Gets Lengthy Sentence
LEADVILLE, Colo. (CBS4) - A Leadville man whose brutal beating of his former girlfriend included stomping on her head received a lengthy sentence on Monday.
According to the district attorney in the Fifth Judicial District, Patrick Irwin, 41, was sentenced to 24 years in prison for first degree burglary, second degree assault and criminal trespass for the Oct. 22, 2013 attack.
Another 16 years for assault and three years for trespassing to be served concurrently with the burglary sentence were also handed down.
According to the district attorney's office, evidence at Irwin's trial revealed the abuse that occurred at the Eagle's Nest Apartments where both Irwin and his ex-girlfriend lived.
"The victim identified Irwin as the attacker who had stomped on her head so hard that imprints were left upon her face and head, correlating to both his shoeprint and the flooring upon which her head was pressed during the violent attack," Tom Kelly with the district attorney's office said in a statement.
Irwin reportedly tried to confuse deputies by making a phone call to them saying the victim's injuries were self-inflicted. But medical staff from the hospital where the victim was treated testified that the her injuries weren't consistent with self-inflicted wounds.
"Domestic violence is not a small crime, as this sentence demonstrates," District Attorney Bruce Brown said. "We are pleased that justice has been served and that the victim in this case can feel safe and secure with Irwin in prison for a lengthy period."
