Heat Wave And Gusty Storms
DENVER (CBS4) - The holiday weekend is certainly bringing the heat to get July rolling. Sunday's high blasted into the 90s coming in at 94 degrees at DIA!
In fact, temperatures over all of the eastern plains Sunday pushed up into the 90s and 100s. Lamar in southeastern Colorado made it to 100 degrees Sunday afternoon.
A strong, high based, dry thunderstorm blasted through Brighton on Sunday afternoon breaking branches and knocking over trees with an estimated 60 to 70 mph downburst wind event.
Severe storms also raced through the northeastern corner of the state Sunday afternoon. A severe thunderstorm watch was in effect through 11pm for Logan, Phillips, Sedgwick and north Yuma counties for 40 mph winds and quarter size hail.
Monday will again be hot with a few isolated afternoon thunderstorms across the mountains and eastern plains. Some of these storms may be severe over the eastern plains close to the Kansas state line.
If you are planning on attending Independence Eve at Civic Center Park on Monday night. Skies will be partly cloudy with a slight chance for a passing storm. Temperatures will be cooling into the 70s by sunset.
Weather will be the same for Tuesday night as well. For July 4th fireworks.
Fire danger will be getting worse over all of the state as the week ahead rolls on.
