Last Weekend Of Summer Will Bring Peak Fall Color To Parts Of Colorado

DENVER (CBS4) - Can you believe it's already the last weekend of summer 2015?

Fall arrives in Colorado at 2:21 a.m. on Wed., Sept. 23 with the Autumnal equinox.

But even though the calendar doesn't officially say fall it already feels like it in parts of the high country where overnight lows are consistently dropping into the 20s near and above tree line.

The chilly temperatures are helping produce peak to near peak conditions for fall color in elevations above 9,000 feet along and north of Interstate 70.

If you're looking to take a drive and catch the colors this weekend the forecast is just about perfect with plenty of sunshine and a slight chill in the air, especially during the morning hours.

There will be a bit of a breeze from time to time so take a sweater or light jacket if you tend to get cold.

Fall color peaks in two stages across Colorado as we move through the next few weeks.

First it peaks in elevation, with locations near tree line changing first. Lower elevations usually follow close behind.

The second phase is peak conditions gradually move south heading into October as cooler weather settles into the region.
