Shots fired at officers in Capitol Hill neighborhood, Denver police say; shelter-in-place lifted
Numerous Denver police officers, including a SWAT team and DPD's helicopter, responded to the Capitol Hill neighborhood in Denver on Saturday night. Several streets were closed, and a shelter-in-place was ordered, but has since been lifted.
Authorities were called to the scene near the area of East 13th Avenue and Logan Street around 9:30 p.m. The Denver Police Department warned that extensive road closures were in place, and all intersections surrounding the area were closed. They were asking drivers to avoid the area while officers work the scene.
They said they don't have information yet on why the person fired at the police.
A helicopter was seen circling the area for hours, and a SWAT vehicle has also responded to the scene. DPD reported that the scene was "extremely active." Even prior to the arrival of SWAT officers with tactical gear, officers were seen searching the area with rifles and shotguns.
Police said that one person sustained a minor leg injury when shots were fired at the officers, and they were taken to the hospital for treatment. They added that no officers were injured.
In a later update, Denver police said a rock was thrown at officers while they were conducting a traffic stop, shots were later fired at them, and one of those shots grazed the person the officers stopped. The department said no officers fired any shots.
The person who was grazed was taken to the hospital and the person who threw the rock was taken into custody, but DPD said the shooting remains under investigation. They did not provide information about the suspect or suspects.
When asked by a commenter on social media if the shooting was related to the protests about ICE earlier in the day in Denver, the department replied, "There is no indication this incident is connected to the demonstration that occurred earlier today."
