Man Shot, Killed By Lakewood Police After Firing Airsoft Pistol At Agents

LAKEWOOD, Colo. (CBS4) - A man was shot and killed by Lakewood police on Thursday morning after agents responded to an argument at an apartment complex. Police responded to the Carmel Waterfront apartment complex located at 10555 West Jewell Avenue around 2:48 a.m.

A spokesperson with the Lakewood Police Department told CBS4 the incident started when a man was reportedly throwing rocks at a neighbor's door. The man pulled a gun on the neighbor when confronted.

Investigators say the man barricaded himself inside an apartment and threatened to kill any officer who tried to enter. The West Metro SWAT Team was called in at that point.

"We kind of did phone negotiations from there," said Lakewood PD Agent Lindsay Jones.

Just before 6 a.m., police said the suspect started firing at agents from his balcony. He went back inside his apartment and came out with what officers say appeared to be a sawed-off shotgun. That's when a SWAT Team member fired one shot at the suspect, who later died from the injury.

The suspect's shotgun was later determined to be an airsoft shotgun. The suspect who died has not been identified. Police say he was 35-years-old.
