Colorado Woman Gets Jail For California Cancer Fraud Scheme

LOS ANGELES (AP) - A woman who bilked people out of $130,000 by falsely claiming to have breast cancer has been sentenced to nearly six months in jail.

The Los Angeles County district attorney's office says Lacy Johnson was also ordered to repay the money she took from donors.

She pleaded no contest in January to grand theft.

After completing her jail sentence, the 37-year-old will serve five years' probation. Johnson was sentenced May 18.

Prosecutors said that between 2010 and 2013, Johnson got as many as 50 people to people to give her money by claiming she needed it for cancer treatment when in fact she didn't have the disease.

Friends of the former Los Angeles resident collected thousands of dollars.

Johnson was arrested in 2013 and extradited from her Colorado home to Southern California.
