Searchers discovered the remains in the Berthoud Falls area near the Urad Mine. Deputies say they were at the bottom of an avalanche slide area.

Jeremy Rich, 42, vanished in the area back in January. He had been backcountry skiing or snowboarding.

"This was the second major search effort for Mr. Rich. The first search was in June and was unsuccessful," the Clear Creek County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.

The Clear Creek coroner is working to identify the remains, which could take several weeks.
