Avalanche General Manager Joe Sakic said the team interviewed "several good candidates" before settling on Bednar.
"Jared's track record of success as a head coach in the American Hockey League speaks for itself and he is considered to be one of the top up-and-coming coaches in our business," Sakix said in a prepared statement.
Last season Bednar coached the Lake Erie Monsters (now the Cleveland Monsters) and the team won the 2016 Calder Cup in June. He also won the ECHL's Kelly Cup in 2009 with the South Carolina Stingrays.
Avalanche have a new head coach. Jared Bednar replaces Patrick Roy. Bednar's only head coaching experience is in minor hockey.

Sakic said upon Patrick Roy's sudden resignation earlier this month that he'd look outside the organization for the Avs' next coach. He did just that with Bednar, who had been in the Columbus system.
