It Could Be Wednesday Before Power Is Restored To Some Around Conifer

CONIFER, Colo. (CBS4) - Thousands of people have been without power in some mountain communities since Sunday night and it might not be back on until Tuesday night or even Wednesday morning for some residents.

The power went out around 10:30 p.m. Sunday and at one point the power was out for as many as 6,000 people around Conifer.

Charging stations have been set up so people can do things like charge their phones and get gas while they wait for the power to come back on.

Ice is a hot commodity.

"This morning we got up and we had to gather all the ice we could and try to get the things out of the refrigerator and freezer," said resident Pat Geyer.

"Not fun, I haven't even had a cup of coffee today," another resident said.

"We are not clear about the cause yet but we are working as quickly as we can," Mike Copp with the Intermountain Rural Electric Association said

By Monday afternoon the number of people without power was around 4,600.

"We had a pole break which caused a fault on a high voltage transmission line," Copp said.

The IREA and Xcel Energy are working to repair the line, but say it's in a very remote area and will take some time -- leaving homeowners and businesses turning to generators.

"We let everyone know as much as we could that we are open today," business owner Elise Martin said.

Or left in the dark.
