Iowa Working To Have Shooting Suspect Returned From Denver

DEWITT, Iowa (AP) — Officials are working to have an Illinois man returned from Colorado to face prosecution for a shooting in front of the DeWitt Police Department building in eastern Iowa.

The Iowa Department of Public Safety said in a web posting Wednesday that 26-year-old Alejandro Andres Lira was arrested last week in Denver and faces Iowa charges of kidnapping, robbery and attempted murder. The Moline, Illinois, resident is accused of shooting 22-year-old Michael Dewispelaere, of Long Grove, Iowa, a little after 11 p.m. on Aug. 11.

Investigators say Dewispelaere was with two other people in a car that night when one of them shot him. The shooter and the other person fled.

Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation Special Agent Richard Rahn says the third person in the car hasn't been located.
