Independence Pass Reopens In Time For Holiday Weekend

ASPEN, Colo. (AP) - Even though it still feels like winter in parts of Colorado's mountains, Independence Pass is back open.

The Colorado Department of Transportation says about 20 cars were lined up waiting to take the scenic shortcut between Twin Lakes and Aspen when the pass opened at noon on Thursday. Crews were plowing and finishing other work up right up until the gates opened.

All the recent snowfall is keeping at least two other mountain passes from opening in time for the Memorial Day weekend. There's no word yet on when Trail Ridge Road through Rocky Mountain National Park and the Mount Evans Highway will reopen.
