Independence Pass Closes For The Winter As Storm Moves In

ASPEN, Colo. (AP) — Independence Pass near Aspen is closed for the winter.

The pass closed Wednesday morning after a storm expected to bring heavy snow to Colorado's mountains moved into the state.

The Colorado Department of Transportation had planned to close the pass for the season on Friday but warned the pass could close earlier because of the storm.

The 12,095-foot pass typically remains open until Nov. 7 each year, depending on the weather, and it usually opens the Thursday before Memorial Day weekend.
