Imagine A High Speed Train In The Mountains
SALIDA, Colo. (CBS4)- One Colorado man has imagined a high speed train that would carry commuters and tourists along a 110-mile trip between Salida and Eagle.
Trains haven't traveled on the tracks for more than a decade but one man, Christof Stork, wants to change that.
"You know, they call this a railroad crossing. There's no train coming though. And it's gorgeous, the tracks are in great shape," said Stork. "People have looked at these tracks and said, 'Let's do something with them.' Now is the time and I have a credible proposal."
His plan calls for 18 stops in nine different towns, connecting the mountain communities.
"It's unique because it actually connects a whole bunch of tourist areas. Tourists could use it for day trips over the gorgeous Tennessee Pass," said Stork.
Train stations would need to be built in Edwards, Eagle and Salida.
"These town centers could use the help," said Stork. "It starts with community interest. If the community wants to do it then you can get the state involved and then you can put together a proposal that can actually pay Union Pacific."
The plan might take five to 10 years for approval and $350 million to get off the ground.
