Idea To Change Allocation Of Colorado House Seats Dropped
DENVER (AP) - Organizers of a ballot proposal to change how seats are apportioned in the Colorado House have dropped the idea because of a lack of signatures.
The group "Restoring Colorado" announced Monday that the goal of getting 86,105 signatures to put the question on the November ballot was unattainable. They had 26 more days to collect signatures.
The proposal would've asked voters to allocate one House seat for each of the state's 65 counties, instead of having the current 65 seats apportioned by population.
Even if the plan succeeded, it was sure to run into constitutional challenges.
The idea grew out of frustration that rural, sparsely populated areas of the state don't have many representatives in the state House.
The group says it plans to try collecting signatures again in 2016.
