I-70 Twin Tunnels May Be Named For Vets

DENVER (AP) - The Twin Tunnels on Interstate-70 near Idaho Springs could be getting a new name. A legislative committee voted Tuesday to rename them the "Veterans Memorial Tunnels."

The Senate Transportation Committee voted 4-0 in favor of the proposal. A Democrat and a Republican co-sponsored the bill to rename the Clear Creek County tunnels to honor veterans.

The tunnels aren't as well known as the Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnel to the west on I-70. That tunnel goes beneath the Continental Divide and is named for former President Dwight Eisenhower and former Colorado Gov. Edwin Johnson.

The Twin Tunnels were built in 1961, as part of a widening of U.S. Highway 6 and U.S. Highway 40 through Clear Creek Canyon.
