Hunters, Hikers At Odds Over Moose Killing

BOULDER COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4) - Hikers and hunters aren't seeing eye to eye this week after one of the latter legally killed a moose with a bow and arrow last weekend.

The kill happened in the Roosevelt National Forest near Brainard Lake, about an hour northwest of Boulder.

Visitors there on Tuesday told CBS4 they enjoy the hiking, fishing and photography the area affords. They said they would rather not see hunters killing moose.

"I wouldn't want any of the hunters to be on a trail if we were around," visitor Pat Howard said. "I wouldn't want that."

Visitors said they saw the hunter kill the deer and despite the legal hunt, some said it's unethical.

But hunters say it's fair game up here where hunting is legal.

Hank Szymanski, a hunter, said culling animals is necessary.

"As far as wildlife management, it has its place," he said. "I hunt big game. I enjoy getting out in the woods."

Others told CBS4 portions of Brainard Lake should be set aside with areas for those who watch the wildlife and those who want to hunt it.
