Hundreds Gather To Remember Victims Of Orlando At Vigil
DENVER (CBS4)- Hundreds of people gathered on Sunday night to remember those killed in Orlando. They came together at Tracks nightclub on Walnut in Denver to show their support for the gay community as well as those shot and killed.
The nation began the week mourning the 49 people killed early Sunday when a gunman wielding an assault-type rifle and a handgun opened fire inside a crowded gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida. Authorities are investigating whether the assault was an act of terrorism, a hate crime, or both.
"We absolutely cannot let this senseless act of violence drive a wedge between the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender communities and our Muslim allies," said Dave Montez, Executive Director of One Colorado.
As a sign of support, Colorado Muslims invited leaders of the gay community to the Islamic Center in Denver.
"We know that the answer to hatred has always been love and unity, not more hatred," said Montez.
The shooter has been identified as Omar Matteen, a Muslim who reportedly became angry recently when he saw two men kissing in Miami.
"We can't let the act of one lone wolf divide the community," said GLBT Community Center of Colorado CEO Debra Pollock.
