Honor Society Students Help Prepare Thanksgiving Dinners For Homeless

DENVER (CBS4) - National Honor Society students from Ponderosa High School spent their Saturday morning packing Thanksgiving care packages for low-income families.

"We always just make sure that we are serving people," said student Morgan Dunham.

The students helped workers at Denver Rescue Mission prepare boxes full of ingredients needed to prepare a Thanksgiving meal.

"Canned fruit, yams, pumpkin, cranberry sauce; all the trimmings for a Thanksgiving meal," said Alexxa Gagner from Denver Rescue Mission.

The 2,000 boxes will be delivered next week to families preselected by the Christian nonprofit.

"When you donate turkeys to the mission or canned goods, you're really putting food on people's tables," Gagner said.

The organization has received 9,000 turkeys so far but is still shy of its goal of 15,000 turkeys.

Gagner said the Thanksgiving meals offer a chance for struggling families to take a break and enjoy the holiday.

"Families that have been struggling, or whatever their situation is, (are) able to cook and feel dignified for their family and celebrate Thanksgiving together."

Denver Rescue Mission is still accepting donations. Donations can be dropped off at the Lawrence Street shelter downtown from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Cash contributions can be made online.
