Hit The Slopes With New Technology

DENVER (CBS4)- Skiers and boarders may get to use what's on display at the Snowsports Industries America Snow Show.

About 18,000 industry insiders will tour the booths at the Colorado Convention Center this weekend looking for the best new inventions. Some 900 vendors are displaying their latest and greatest must-haves for the slopes next ski season.

"What happens here is retailers from all over the country and internationally come and see the products that are going to be for sale next year," said SIA President David Ingemie.

This year the focus is on technology, from devices mounted on boards to new types of clothing to weather the elements.

"This is the gathering place for the outerwear industry so it's critically important," said nu down President Bob Hall.

One new invention uses air to keep you warm instead of feathers or other fillers.

"We all know it's the air not the feathers that keep you warm so we found a way to create air channels to compress air and hold them in the channel without feathers or fill that space," said Hall.

Camera maker GoPro is showing off new live streaming technology through the app Periscope.

"Now we have that ability to just send that feed live, direct stream live out to the world," said GoPro spokesman Nick Berger. "That's allowing us now to connect our GoPro and actually stream lived out to the world."

Even safety equipment is going high tech like this SUBQ Jackson Jacket that can keep you safe in an avalanche.

"The buying power of the retailers attending this show is somewhere in the $3 and a half to $3.8 billion, 80 percent of all retail sales," said Ingemie.

There's also a lot more than products at the SIA show, the administrator of the Environmental Protection agency led a discussion on climate change and the impact on the ski industry. There was also a meeting focusing on travel and lodging.
