High Country Businesses Reveling In Good Snowpack

VAIL, Colo. (AP) - Two years after seeing a historic low, Vail Valley businesses are celebrating a good snow year.

The Vail Daily, citing figures tracked by the federal Natural Resources Conservation Service, reports Tuesday that as of the end of last week, measurements taken at Vail show snowpack above the 30-year peak of 22.5 inches. Across the Colorado River basin, snowpack was 31 percent higher than the 30-year average. A historic low was recorded in 2012.

The Daily quoted Sean Glackin, who co-owns Alpine Quest stores in Edwards and Vail with his wife Cory, as saying he expects a long backcountry touring season for spring.

Ice-fishing entrepreneur Steve Visosky says it's only been in the past few weeks that even high-elevation lakes and reservoirs have become too slushy for business.
