Hickenlooper Signs 2 Bills To Help Colorado School Kids

DENVER (CBS4) - Gov. John Hickenlooper signed two bills into law on Tuesday aimed at children's welfare.

One bill expands a program that ensures all elementary school children receive free lunch and breakfast if they qualify for reduced prices.

"One study after another shows that if a kid's hungry, it's hard for them to focus, it is hard for the teacher to hold their attention," Hickenlooper said at the signing. "Sometimes they end up disrupting the whole class, making it harder for other kids to learn."

The other bill funds efforts to encourage kids to walk and bike to school, and provides for sidewalk repairs and safe road crossings.
