Heavy Rain Causes Flooding Across El Paso County
EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4)- Heavy rain caused flooding across El Paso County on Wednesday night that left standing water over several roadways and forced a section of Highway 24 to close.
Highway 24 was closed from Cascade to Manitou Springs because of a flash flood warning in that area. There was no estimate for when the highway may reopen.
Voluntary evacuations were encouraged in some parts of Manitou. The evacuation center opened at 105 Pawnee just before 9 p.m.
Even a small amount of rain can cause flooding as the water washes down the Waldo Canyon Fire burn scar. The lack of vegetation sends mud and debris left in the wake of the wildfire down streets in the middle of town.
Sandbags and Jersey Barriers lined the streets of Manitou in hopes of preventing some water damage.
Severe thunderstorms also brought heavy rain and hail to Woodland Park.
The heavy rain caused flash flooding in Fountain where standing water crossed Pleasant Valley Road, stranding people on both sides. Fountain is located south of Colorado Springs.
Fountain Creek was supposed to reach its highest levels at 9:45 p.m.
Flash flooding also caused standing water in Colorado Springs.
There were no reports of injuries from the storms.
