Hearing Postponed For Officer In Fatal Rocky Ford Shooting

LA JUNTA, Colo. (AP) — A judge has postponed the preliminary hearing involving a Rocky Ford police officer who was charged with second-degree murder after he shot and killed a 27-year-old man.

James Ashby was arrested last month for the Oct. 12 death of Jack Jacquez Jr., who was shot in his home. Circumstances surrounding the shooting are detailed in the arrest warrant, but that document has been sealed.

Ashby's preliminary hearing was set to begin Monday, but his attorneys asked for more time to review evidence. A new hearing has been set for Jan. 15.

The shooting led to protest marches and a candlelight vigil in the southeastern Colorado community.
