Hawaiian Mountains Could See Nearly A Foot Of Snow

HAWAII (CBS4) - Winter is coming in the last place you'd expect it.

Large amounts of snow are accumulating on the summits of both Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa in Hawaii.

A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for the area, for locations above 8,000 feet. Temperatures are expected to fall below freezing. Meteorologists say the summits will see six to 12 inches of snow through Friday night.

Besides the cold, the summits could experience winds up to 40 miles per hour, gusting at times to nearly 50 miles per hour, along with drifting snow and freezing fog.

The winter weather is not entirely unexpected. The summits of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa are both above 13,000 feet.
