Guilty Verdict For Shooter In Capitol Hill Neighborhood Standoff
DENVER (CBS4) - A man accused of firing shots from an upper floor apartment into the streets of Denver's Capitol Hill neighborhood was found guilty on Friday.
Shaun Michael Tobelmann, 36, was found guilty on seven counts of attempted first-degree murder, seven counts of first-degree assault on a peace officer, one count of third-degree assault and 23 counts of unlawful discharge of a firearm.
On Feb. 21, 2013 Tobelmann was involved in a domestic violence incident with his girlfriend, who called 911.
Police responded to the location near 12th and Grant and came under fire from Tobelmann, who had barricaded himself inside his residence. Over the course of several hours he repeatedly fired rounds at the officers who were inside the apartment as well as
officers posted on the street below. These rounds included 25 shotgun rounds, 10 9mm rounds and five .357 Magnum rounds. Although fired upon, not a single round was fired by any DPD officer.
During the trial, officers who were at the scene gave emotional testimony, saying they thought they might die. Negotiators were eventually able to utilize tactics and negotiation to take Tobelmann into custody. No injuries were reported.
Tobelmann is scheduled to be sentenced on May 8.
