Greeley Gathers To Mourn Killed Basketball Players

GREELEY, Colo. (AP) — Students and teachers will gather at Greeley Central High School Tuesday evening to remember two recent graduates killed in a car crash.

Eighteen-year-olds Edwardo Hernandez and Matthew Garcia were killed Sunday when a car driven by Hernandez failed to stop at a stop sign and hit another car. Authorities say both teens were wearing seat belts and that neither alcohol, drugs nor speed were factors in the crash.

The accident came just a week after their graduation.

The Greeley Tribune reports that Garcia was honored last week as the best boys basketball player in Weld County during the newspaper's prep sports banquet. Despite being just 5-foot-5, he led the Wildcats with a 16 point scoring average.
