Grass Fire Flares Up On Fort Carson Near Homes

FORT CARSON, Colo. (CBS4) - A fire burned dangerously close to homes in El Paso County on Saturday.

Fort Carson officials say the fire broke out near the Navajo Village housing area. Personnel who live there and who are part of the Warrior Transition Battalion and the 10th Special Forces Complex were evacuated, but can now return home.

The flames erupted on Fort Carson near Gate 5.

The Fort Carson Special Events Center was set up for evacuees. About 400 people were affected by the evacuation with more than 100 taking temporary shelter at the events center.

The post's hospital commander had diverted patients from the Evans Army Community Hospital to "civilian health care systems," but the hospital running under normal operations again.

Fort Carson's Garrison Commander says they have "active control" of the fire which burned about 700 acres. Officials say they don't anticipate any more growth.

It's unclear if there are any injuries or damages. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
