Grand Jury To Investigate Shooting By Grand County Sheriff

TABERNASH, Colo. (AP) - A grand jury will investigate last month's shooting of a suspected burglar in Tabernash by the Grand County sheriff.

District Attorney Brett Barkey announced the move Tuesday, noting that a law passed by lawmakers this year requires the public to be notified when an officer-involved shooting is referred to a grand jury.

Sheriff Brett Schroetlin shot and wounded 20-year-old Conor James Maclaird on Sept. 15 after a robbery was reported at a liquor store.

In a statement, Barkey said the suspect is alleged to have attacked the sheriff with a knife.

The proceedings of the grand jury will be secret.
