Gloomy Weather Impacts Economy Of Local Businesses

DENVER (CBS4) - The rain is expected to stick around for Memorial Day weekend, and the bad weather is beginning to affect business.

Typically this time of year the sun is shining and fans fill most seats at Coors Field. Instead, seats are empty, as are the patio spots at the Blake Street Tavern.

"It has affected our patio business a great deal," said manager Shelley Armand.

Just a block from the Rockies' home field, the tavern's employees are being told to stay home because there's no one to serve.

Armand says sales are way down compared to this time last year.

"We get a lot of families that come down and I think that people are just canceling out because they don't want to drive all the way downtown and sit in the rain...so I don't blame them for that," she said.

Some baseball fans are OK with the clouds, "I think it's great, it's actually a little cooler," said one.

But businesses that thrive when it's sunny and when the home team is winning are ready for a change-up.

"You can't have everything all the time, but we're going to be just fine. We're just waiting for the sunshine," Armand said.

Another business affected by the weather is Water World. The water park was scheduled to open on Saturday, but is now hoping to open Monday for Memorial Day, depending on the forecast.
