'Girls & Science' Event Hopes To Inspire Youngsters
DENVER (CBS4) - Hundreds of families packed the Denver Museum of Nature and Science on Saturday for Girls and Science, a one-day fun event some parents hope will spark lengthy careers.
A sea of girls flocked inside at the museum. While some met the faces who forecast the weather, others donned their hard hats to learn about dams. The event aims to inspire girls to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and, of course, meteorology.
"This is a really great event for girls because not a lot of times they're introduced to science as little ones, so if we get them interested now that may spark them to turn their career around in the future," CBS4 Forecaster Lauren Whitney said.
There were plenty of future meteorologists in the house, like 6-year-old Bailey Tyler who says she always watches the forecast before bed.
"I get to know what's where and if I can play outside or not," she said.
The youngsters also tried their hand at the green screen -- where TV forecasters stand in front of the maps and graphics.
Over at the Arapahoe County coroner's booth fearless girls experiment with maggots as their parents watched from a safe distance.
"Oh, she loves bugs. That is her thing -- bugs and insects," a mother said.
As parents looked on watching the fun, some hope the day's event will translate into a lifelong profession.
It was the first year for the event. The Denver Museum of Nature and Science, along with CBS4, hope there will be many more.
