Girl With Down Syndrome An Asset For Manitou Springs Cheer Team

GOLDEN, Colo. (CBS4) - The state champion Manitou Springs cheerleaders are a group of girls with a special bond. They took part in another competition at the School of Mines on Saturday, and among the Mustangs was Kory Mitchell, who has Down syndrome.

They are a group of girls bonded through hard work and dedication, but also acceptance and friendship. Atop their pyramid on one routine stands a petite 16-year-old Kory.

"She had center pyramid, which is usually a great spot," cheerleader Ryan said.

Kory's Down syndrome hasn't held her back from being an asset to a winning team.

"She's always smiling, always happy," cheerleader Brianna said.

It's now Kory's second year on the Mustang Cheer Squad.

"This is just perfect for her," Kory's mother Bonnie King said.

It's something King has always encouraged Kory to do.

"She really wants to be a dancer, a singer; she's a big ham," King said.

"I'm working hard, doing my best," Kory said.

As the cheer season continues, Kory says win or lose, the competition and fun is all about school spirit and friendship.

"This is my dream come true," Kory said. "I like my team."

The Manitou cheerleaders finished second in their event in Golden on Saturday.
