Fort Collins Weather Station To Celebrate 125 Years Of Data

DENVER (CBS4) - Come rain or shine, there will be a big celebration taking place on Monday, July 28, at Colorado State University, to honor 125 years of daily weather observations at the Fort Collins weather station.

A community open house will be held from 3-6 p.m. with remarks at 3:30 p.m..

This event is free and open the public.

Several weather experts will be on hand for the presentation of a historic plaque, and there will be self-guided tours of the weather station itself.

"The Weather Station is an historical part of the University," said State Climatologist Nolan Doesken. "Data collection began near the site of the former 'Old Main' in the 1870s. Daily climate records since Jan. 1, 1889, are complete and available in a variety of digital and hardcopy forms, making this one of Colorado's oldest weather stations and an incredible scientific resource."

The Fort Collins weather station, located on the CSU campus, has been providing daily weather data to Colorado and the nation for 125 years.

Today, the Campus Weather Station is located next to the CSU Transit Center, just northwest of the Lory Student Center, off Plum Street.

Should there be inclement weather, the event will take place in the atrium of the Suzanne and Walter Scott Jr. Bioengineering Building, northwest of the weather station, on the corner of Loomis and Laurel streets.

If you're unable to make it, there will be a follow-up event on August 11, from 7-8:30 p.m..

"The History of the Fort Collins Weather Station, What Have We Learned" will be held in the Suzanne and Walter Scott Jr. Bioengineering Building, Auditorium room 101.
