Former Nugget Ty Lawson Pleads Guilty To DWAI For Denver Incident

DENVER (CBS4) - Former Denver Nuggets point guard Ty Lawson pleaded guilty Thursday in Denver to DWAI (driving while ability impaired) as well as failure to drive in a single lane in connection with a drunk driving incident that occurred last January.

Lawson was arrested going nearly double the speed limit on Park Avenue West heading towards the Interstate 25 on-ramp. The officer reported Lawson slurring his words and swaying as he stood. He refused a breathalyzer.

The point guard had been with teammates, coaches and staff at Punch Bowl Social raising money for the Kroenke Sports charity, but that ended 3 hours earlier in the night.

After his arrest Lawson was arrested again in Los Angeles about six months later on similar charges.

"There are no sentencing stipulations, so the judge will have the full range of probation and up to 180 days in jail at her discretion when Mr. Lawson is sentenced at a hearing," Lynn Kimbrough with the district attorney's office said.

The sentencing hearing is scheduled for Jan. 14.

The Nuggets, fed up with his off-the-court troubles, traded Lawson to the Houston Rockets for virtually nothing.
