Denver Fire Department spokesman Capt. Greg Pixley called the fire "devastating."

"Initial reports indicate that there was one toddler, one child and three adults that succumbed to the effects of the fire," Pixley said.

A friend of the family who died told CBS4 that they were from Senegal. Neighbors and friends said that Djibril Diol, his wife and daughter were killed in the fire.

"I can't really talk right now because I am heartbroken, but all I can say is he was a good person, he was supportive, he was a good brother of mine," said Moussa Diol.

"Our initial reports is that the individuals were on the first floor."

Pixley said three people were able to escape from the fire by jumping from an upper floor. They were all injured, but so far it's not clear how badly.

Homes on either side of the fire sustained some minor damage.

A GoFundMe campaign has been created for the Diol family.
