'Life Flashed Before My Eyes': Man Almost Hit By Car Crashing Into Bank
LONGMONT, Colo. (CBS4) - Longmont police say Darin Newbold, 32, flipped his Toyota RAV4 in to a 1st Bank on Monday morning.
The bank is located near Ken Pratt and Hover. The car crashed through the window and into the bank just before 9:30 a.m.
One witness described the vehicle turning onto Hover traveling at least 50 mph after he sideswiped two other vehicle, hopped the median and mowed down several trees. After the vehicle became airborne, the vehicle crashed into the bank.
"I was sitting there, going to work. Then, all of a sudden, a car comes screaming by," said Adam Laughrey, a witness. "He was coming right at me."
Laughrey was narrowly missed by the car.
"My life flashed before my eyes, pretty much. If he were to hit me, it would have been done. So, you know, it just made me realize that you can be doing everything right and somebody else can just lose it and come right at you and it could be over," said witness Adam Laughrey. "It was scary."
Police tell CBS4's Dillon Thomas Newbold took the turn too fast and speed and drugs are suspected factors.
Fortunately, nobody was hit by the vehicle. Also, no bank employees were in the part of the building the vehicle hit.
Investigators say two bank employees ran to help Newbold right after the crash and were injured during their rescue efforts.
One employee was treated for lacerations to his forehead after glass hit him.
Newbold was rushed to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Damage to the building is extensive and the bank will remain closed for an undetermined amount of time.
"This made me realize you can be doing everything right, and somebody else can just lose it and come right at you, and it could be over," Laughrey said.
