Fire Threatens Homes, Residents Evacuated

GRAND COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4) - The wildfire burning near Kremmling has forced residents from their homes.

Firefighters called for a helicopter to help with the wildfire burning near Grand River Ranch and Gore Woods Estates, located five miles west of Kremmling.

The fire has burned less than 10 acres since it was first reported Tuesday afternoon.

About 12 homes have been evacuated. Some 75 fire crews attacked the blaze from the ground.

The fire burned in heavy timber and was fueled by strong winds.

Residents believe the quick response from crews helped protect their homes.

"They came in about noon yesterday and we were happy to see the emergency vehicles come right away and they blocked off the road to start evacuating people pretty quickly," said resident Carol Culbreath. "So it was nice to see all that support coming in."

The fire was 35 percent contained as of Wednesday evening. The evacuations will remain in place.

What started the fire remains under investigation.
