The fire broke out after 11 a.m. Denver police said it happened in a garage in an alley between Federal Boulevard and South Eliot Street.

CBS4's Mile High Cam showed black smoke coming from the scene right after the explosion.

Firefighters say the amount of debris in the yard made it harder to fight the fire.

Authorities blocked off some of Federal Boulevard to make it easier for emergency vehicles to get to the scene.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Damage to the home has displaced seven people. Firefighters did help rescue nine pets from the home, but a canary died in the fire.
