Federal Judge Considers Colorado Gay Marriage Case
DENVER (AP) — Another round of legal wrangling over the future of gay marriage in Colorado is scheduled Tuesday in Denver, this time in federal court.
Six couples have sued to overturn the state's same-sex marriage ban. State Attorney John Suthers and Gov. John Hickenlooper aren't defending the voter-approved amendment but they have said they want the ban to remain in effect as other court cases play out.
Lawyers for the couples say people's rights shouldn't be put on hold.
Suthers concedes it's only a matter of time until gay marriage is legal in Colorado. However he's asking the state Supreme Court to stop county clerks from issuing marriage licenses to gay couples as long as it remains in effect. He's also appealing last week's ruling from a state judge against the ban.
