1 Dead In Crash At I-76 Onramp

DENVER (CBS4) - A driver was killed in a crash at Federal Boulevard and Interstate 76 on Saturday evening.

The on-ramp to the interstate was closed for most of the evening.

The state just spent millions in an attempt to prevent street racing in that area, and initially police said they believed the crash was a result of street racing. Later, they said they weren't sure of the cause of the crash.

"A northbound vehicle was making a left turn from northbound Federal to westbound I-76 -- he got T-boned," Cpl. Heath Griscavage with the Colorado State Patrol said.

The driver of a silver Hyundai didn't know what was coming. The accident sent the car into a light post and killed the driver.

The driver and passenger inside a Chevy sedan were sent to the hospital. It was expected the driver would be cited.

The crash happened just after 5 p.m.

Federal was closed underneath I-76 for hours into the night as investigators mapped out what they believe happened.

Last summer the Colorado Department of Transportation completed a $2 million project to install medians and street lights along the stretch of Federal where the crash happened.
