Crash That Killed Teen Another Blow To Platte Canyon School District

BAILEY, Colo. (CBS4) - A teenager is dead after an accident in the high country. The victim was a passenger in a pickup truck driven by another teenager.

The truck went off County Road 58 not far from the town of Grant and Kenosha Pass at approximately 6 p.m. on Tuesday.

Driver Alex Bundy, 18, who is set to graduate next month, along with one of the three passengers inside were ejected. A 17-year-old died at the scene. Bundy and the other two were rushed to Denver-area hospitals.

Police say the teens were returning home from a four-wheeling trip when the truck rolled. Along the dirt county road near Kenosha Pass there are snapped trees, skid marks and broken glass where the crash occurred.

Platte Canyon Schools Superintendent Brenda Krag says they're still trying to come to terms with what happened. For the small Platte Canyon High School it marked yet another horrible event they are left to deal with.

Park County Deputy Nate Carrigan was killed by a gunman while serving an eviction notice in February. He was a Platte Canyon High School baseball coach and was very involved with the school.

"We've had a rough year, there's no doubt about it. Certainly with Nate Carrigan's incident earlier, and now with our student incident, it's been a very tough year for our school district," Krag said. "It's a hard hit on the community. The students involved in this accident have been in our school district for many years. Lots of families and other students know them."

Colorado State Patrol troopers said the teens weren't wearing seat belts, but they don't suspect speed or alcohol were factors in the crash. The investigating is ongoing.

Krag said extra grief counselors were on hand for students and teachers.
