3 Teens Killed In Crash While Heading Into The Mountains
CONIFER, Colo. (CBS4) - Three teenagers died and another was seriously injured in a rollover crash near Conifer Tuesday afternoon.
According to Nate Reid with the Colorado State Patrol, sometime after 4 p.m. a pickup truck carrying four people went off South Foxton Road and fell 20 to 30 feet into a creek.
Authorities were alerted around 4:30 p.m. when a passerby noticed the wreck.
"One of the locals was driving down Foxton and happened to see the body out in the field," said Master Sgt. Donald Enloe of the Colorado State Patrol.
CSP said one teen ejected nearly 50 feet was pronounced dead at the scene, as were the driver and front seat passenger. The fourth, a 17-year-old from Kansas, survived and was taken to St. Anthony Hospital.
Authorities believe the group was heading west into the mountains to go camping.
"Looking at the tire marks, it's obvious that the car was going around the corner too fast, and began to rotate counter-clockwise and went off the embankment," said Enloe.
Troopers say one of the teens is from Colorado, but the truck has plates from Kansas. Authorities are working to notify the families.
Reid said the weather was dry at the time but there are sharp curves on Foxton Road. It is not yet known if drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.
No names have been released.
