Police Search For At Least 3 Drivers In Fatal Motorcycle Hit & Run On I-25

By Stan Bush

DENVER (CBS4) - A fatal motorcycle accident on southbound Interstate 25 at Santa Fe Drive snarled traffic early Wednesday morning. Police continued to search for at least three drivers in the hit-and-run.

Police said the man on the motorcycle was hit by a semi truck about 4:30 a.m. which ejected the rider from the motorcycle.

After that, a sedan and a box-style delivery truck hit the man and he died. The accident is being investigated as a hit and run.

"That driver (of the semi) may not even know that he hit someone but I have reason to believe those other vehicles do know that they hit someone or at least something," said Denver Police Traffic Division Sgt. Mike Farr.

Southbound I-25 was closed at the West Alameda Avenue exit for the investigation, and backups extended north of 6th Avenue and onto Santa Fe.

Drivers were directed off the highway at Alameda, with one lane of traffic moving through until I-25 reopened at 6:28 a.m.

Police are looking for up to three different drivers. The semi truck is described as having a white cab with red lettering and a hopper trailer with three dump cones, one of the cars is a sedan, another car is a box truck.

Investigators say they have not begun to contact trucking companies in the area whose equipment matches that description.

Police say several other drivers stopped to survey the accident scene, but did not call authorities.

The family of the victim on the motorcycle, a man who was not wearing a helmet, has been
notified but the victim's identity has not been released.

Police are asking for anyone who was driving the highway in the Alameda area at 4:30 a.m. to call 720-337-1000.
