Fallen Officers Honored At Colorado State Patrol Academy

GOLDEN, Colo. (CBS4)- Those law enforcement officers who gave their lives in the line of duty were honored in a solemn ceremony on Friday.

Law enforcement officers from across Colorado gathered at the Colorado State Patrol Academy located near Interstate 70 and Colfax in Golden.

The keynote speaker talked about Jefferson County Sheriff Deputy Dave Baldwin who will be put on the memorial next year. Baldwin died after being struck by a wrong way driver while he was riding his motorcycle.

Four men from early Colorado history were also honored.

Marshal George Smith was shot by men who stole saddles in 1882.

Denver Police Officer Gustave Gisin was gunned down by a drunk man who was angry at co-workers in 1893.

A burglar killed Denver Police Officer Wendell Smith while he was patrolling Colfax in 1896.

A robber in Park Hill killed Denver Police Officer Roy Downing in 1920.
