FAA: Drone Detection Crucial For Airline Passenger Safety

DENVER (CBS4) - The Federal Aviation Administration is testing new technology that could detect unmanned aircraft, or drones, as the devices approach Denver International Airport.
Radars currently in use cannot detect small drones.
The FAA says spotting those drones is crucial for the safety of commercial airline passengers.
"We don't want anything in the controlled airspace around a busy airport that could pose a distraction hazard to a pilot or a collision hazard for the aircraft," said Ian Gregor, Public Affairs Manager with the FAA Pacific Division.
Since DIA started tracking drone encounters there have been more than one a month in airport space.
