Expansion Of Westbound I-70 Tunnel Set To Begin

IDAHO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — Construction crews are expected to start work this spring on adding a third lane to the westbound bore of the Twin Tunnels on Interstate 70.

The eastbound bore was widened to three lanes last year. The tunnel is just east of Idaho Springs.

The Colorado Transportation Commission approved $55 million on Thursday to expand the westbound bore. Work is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

The expansion is part of a long-term project to ease congestion on the heavily traveled interstate, which links Denver with some of the state's largest ski areas.
