Evacuations ordered due to wildfire near trails west of Boulder

Evacuations have been ordered for an area west of Boulder due to a wildfire on Monday evening, Boulder County officials said.

County officials said the evacuation orders are in place in the area of 519 Wild Turkey Trail in Fourmile Canyon. As of about 9:45 p.m., the fire was holding at 3 acres, up from the 1 acre officials reported about two hours earlier, and crews said they were in mop-up mode.

Evacuees are being told to avoid Wild Turkey Trail and take Evening Star Road for evacuations.

Boulder County Sheriff's Office spokesman Vinnie Montez said in a video posted just before 6:30 p.m. that if you're in the evacuation zone, you should leave immediately. He said 662 people received the evacuation notification and 499 structures were in that zone. One structure was threatened, but as of 10 p.m., none were lost, and no injuries were reported.

"This is not the time to start calling people to try to figure out what's going on; you need to heed the advice and do what you're being asked to do," he said.

He also asked others to stay out of the area so as not to interfere with first responders. As of 10 p.m., there was no estimated time for people to be able to return to their homes.

The evacuation zone covers the unincorporated community of Crisman, about 8 miles northwest of downtown Boulder. An evacuation warning zone was later added east and west of the initial evacuation zone near Sugarloaf Mountain and Bald Mountain, but then an all-clear was called around 9:30 p.m.

Wind gusts of 40 to 50 mph were complicating efforts among crews, but those winds started to die down later into the night.

No dedicated shelters have been set up yet, but the sheriff's office says if you need somewhere to go, you can go to the parking lot of the Boulder County Justice Center at Boulder Canyon Drive and 6th Street.
