Elaborate Aspen Wedding May Prompt Zoning Changes
ASPEN, Colo. (AP) — A wedding so elaborate that it has raised eyebrows in Aspen may prompt zoning changes in the resort community.
A ceremony planned Saturday at the Little Annie Basin on the backside of Aspen Mountain has sparked neighbor complaints and derision from local officials.
The Aspen Times reports the ceremony involves a temporary chapel and a 27,000-square-foot tent. Trucks have been making trip after trip to bring supplies to a meadow zoned "rural/remote."
The bride-to-be is Alex Steel, daughter of Aspen Institute chairman Robert K. Steel.
County officials at first considered requiring a temporary commercial permit for the ceremony. But because it is a free event, no permit is required.
County commissioners will meet next week to discuss an emergency ordinance for modification to the rural and remote zoning and special-permit standards.
