Effort To Recall Sheriff Terry Maketa Ends In El Paso County

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (CBS4) – A group behind the effort to recall El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa says even though they have the required amount of signatures they don't think they got enough to pass the signature verification process.

The group announced they exceeded to 44,387 signatures needed to get the recall on the November ballot but they are ending the recall effort.

"We didn't have the buffer we wanted," Randy Stagner, the leader of the group behind the recall, told KKTV in Colorado Springs.

More than 48,000 people signed the petition, according to the group.

Maketa was elected to the position and only voters can remove him.
