Three people, including two children, killed in crash on I-70 near Limon, Colorado State Patrol says

SUV rear ends semi truck in triple fatal crash in eastern Colorado

Three people, including two children, were killed in an interstate crash involving a semi-truck near Limon on Wednesday afternoon, according to Colorado State Patrol. The eastbound lanes of Interstate 70 were closed for many hours afterwards.

The crash was reported around 2:30 p.m. about 13 miles west of Limon. The interstate was fully back open by 8 p.m.

CSP said in an earlier statement that four people had died but then in an updated news release, said three people died. They said they are investigating what led up to the crash.

A Subaru Forester rear-ended a semi-truck that was hauling a trailer as both were heading eastbound, CSP said in a news release.

The Subaru had four people in it, and the driver was taken to the hospital. A public information officer for CSP did not know the condition of the driver at 4 p.m. The driver of the semi-truck was not injured, according to CSP.

Limon is about 90 miles east of Denver and about 90 miles west of the Kansas state line.

During the interstate closure, some drivers who were heading home for the 4th of July holiday weekend had to scramble to find an alternative route.

"I saw that I-70 was going to be closed or something, so I took a detour all the way out through the road out here," Sam Addison said.
